African Fat-Tailed Geckos (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus)
African fat-tailed geckos are different from leopard geckos, although they look quite similar. They cannot be bred with one another, and cannot share cages. They come from totally different habitats. While leopard geckos stem from the rocky deserts and grassland steppes of India, Pakistan, and Iran, African fat-tailed geckos (or, for short, AFTs) come from the dry and arid regions of the Sahara desert. However, they bury themselves into humid hiding places where they spend most of their day. Thus, proper husbandry includes lots of humidity, and the cages should be misted at least once a day. Like leopard geckos, fat-tailed geckos are from the subfamily Eublepharinae, which are distinguished from other gecko families by being crepuscular, terrestrial, having vertical pupils, and no adhesive lamellae (sticky feet). They can grow to be 6-10 inches; the males being slightly bigger than the females (about two inches). The wild type is brown with tan bands, and a possible thin white stripe along the back. They eat crickets like leopard geckos, but are sometimes hard to get used to mealworms.
LZRDGRL acquired her first AFTs in November 2011. The breeding groups for 2012 will include:
